Obituary for Richard Pahl

Richard (Rick) Edward Pahl, 74, passed away on 7/14/22 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, following a long struggle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born in Jackson, MI, to parents Edward L. and Mary Therese (Doyle) Pahl. He received a B.A. and MSW from Western Michigan University, and spent over three decades as a social worker in Kalamazoo, MI, with organizations such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Children’s Protective Services; and Family and Children Services. He built and enjoyed living in a rustic log cabin on a small farm near Lawrence, MI, where he raised sheep for many years and was a member of the local sustainable farming organization. For decades, he and his close friend, Thom Phillips, had a yearly ritual of collecting sap and processing many gallons of maple syrup from the farm’s woods to share with friends and relatives. Rick’s love of life was most evident when he was surrounded by friends and family with a glass of wine in hand.

Rick is survived by his daughter Alicia (Andy) Cornelius and granddaughters Isla and Roma; son Colin (Mattie) Pahl and grandson, Cooper; and life partner of 17 years, Cheryl Foster. He is also survived by his five siblings, Rosemary (Chip) Smith, Chuck (Brenda Nelson) Pahl, Therese (Tom) Dull, Patricia Schaefer, and Kenneth (Jill) Pahl, and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place according to Rick’s wishes, and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.
