Obituary for Dan Kocher

Dan Kocher died peacefully during the night in his home surrounded by the works of his own hands on the 24th of June, 2022. Dan was a Michigander born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 6, 1956 and living all 66 of his years in Michigan.
He is survived by his wife Wendy (Larson) Kocher; siblings, Pam (Wes) Hasty, Richard Kocher, and Michael Kocher; children, Tina (Tony) Sims, and David (April) Kocher; grandchildren, Elora Rose Sims, Logan Gerald James Kocher, and Aubrey Renee Kocher, and many other members of his extended family whose lives he has touched so deeply. Everyone who entered Dan’s life was a member of his family as far as he was concerned. He is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver John Kocher and Maxine Qualls and his Sister-in-law Gretchen Larson.
Dan was a character to say the least. His family was his reason for “doing” in life from a young age on. Dan was always doing something. He somehow found a way to work as hard as he could owning and operating his own businesses and multiple properties over the course of his career while still making time for his family. Not only did he make time for his family, but he also made time for the church family serving as a member of the church council and a constant volunteer. He also made time for any other family who needed his helping hand. He did renovations to many homes in the area not the least of which were the homes he lived in, which were most often in disarray from his remodeling projects around the house. He also spent a portion of his career supplying handcrafted display cabinets in homes and businesses around the area, even installing some across state lines. Dan’s ability to continue his work was taken from him in 2016 when he was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy, a rare form of Alzheimer’s. He lived under the careful care of his wife Wendy along with the help of many others for a blessed 6 years full of love. Despite his condition, Dan never lost his sense of humor and kept the family along with anyone who knew him laughing. His faith got him through the difficult days, but he is the one who got those around him through those difficult days. Dan will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Gethsemane Lutheran Church at 3152 Clyde Park Ave SW Wyoming, MI 49509 on Sunday July 10th @ 3:00PM. A reception will follow with treats- as Dan would have it. All are invited to attend and celebrate Dan’s life and legacy of family and love.
In lieu of flowers the family would request donations be given to Emanuel Hospice, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation, or any other charity of preference.
