Obituary for Arlene Sabaitis

Arlene Sabaitis (née Kasianowicz) passed away peacefully at home on December 29, 2022, and will be greatly missed. She was born 95 years ago on December 13, 1927. Arlene grew up experiencing the trials of the Great Depression and World War II. In 1948 she married Donald Sabaitis, and for 19 years, nurtured her family of six (2 sons and 2 daughters) for her husband who wished only for a loving family. In 1968 at the age of 40, she was widowed.
It seemed like everybody loved Arlene, whether it be her family, friends, or the many customers at Revco Drugstore from which she retired. She had a keen sense of humor, a great willingness to let go and just enjoy people, and made a doozy of a Manhattan. She was a favorite for many years at the winter happy hours in Englewood, Florida, with her best friend, Donna. Her annual Easter parties were the family bash, with up to 50 people jammed into her house and lingering late into the day because of the pure enjoyment. She wanted Easter for her family to be her mark on the world.
Arlene loved to read, collect shells on Florida beaches, and was a great cook. Friends were always anticipating her next batch of sourdough bread. Arlene wanted her daughters to grow up educated and independent and not to have to struggle like she did when her husband died at 39 years of age. At that time, when women were treated and paid much less than men, her strength and stubborn personality prevailed. Arlene worked as a store clerk and made sure there was always food on the table, a good car, and that her children became college graduates. Her greatest pleasure was reading to her grandchildren and passing on her love of books. Her other love was of her spoiled pets, and Zeke the African Grey parrot will miss her dearly.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Donald Sabaitis and her brother John Kasianowicz. She is survived by her children Michael Sabaitis (Judy), Charles Sabaitis, Mary Jo Sabaitis who devotedly cared for her mother the last several years, and Ellen Knoop (Scott), three grandchildren Stacy Sabaitis, Susan Rau (Preston), and Ross Knoop, siblings Mary Ann Fox, Ron Kasianowicz (Mary), and JoAnn Kasianowicz.

As per Arlene’s wishes, her family will be hosting an open house in her honor in May.
Memorials in Arlene’s name would be appreciated to your favorite public library.
